Turnaround time from brief to recording was one week, so collaboration across all departments from costumes to staging was vital. For each performance we created animated PreViz to enable the production team to visualise what the stage would look like. Onsite, we worked particularly closely with lighting director Gurdip Mahal to ensure that the graphics looked as good as they could be and accommodate any last minute requests for changes.
The slideshow below shows still examples from the PreViz generated.
THE PROCESS
The background performance visuals can massively impact the overall experience of any dance routine. With screens up to 11 metres high and surrounding three sides of Julian Healy’s enormous set, this was particularly true of all the performances of Dance 100.
Studio Lambert asked Potion Pictures to design and animate time coded performance visuals for all 36 dance routines. A unique aspect of this dance competition was that the contestant choreographers had a stake in every aspect of the performance, including screen graphics. Working alongside creative director Liam Lunniss, we ensured that each look was carefully crafted to enhance the contestant’s desired mood and tone of the choreography without ever overshadowing the dance. The final result was five episodes showcasing a huge range of styles from high-energy hip hop routines to graceful contemporary dances, all brought to life with stunning graphics.
