The sequence was storyboarded and then we created a 3D animatic to work out shots and lighting in advance. The turnaround time between shooting and broadcast was less than four weeks, so we used a real time rendering solution using Unreal for all the background shots. This meant that we wouldn’t be facing long rendering times for each pass.
We supervised the VFX shoot which was all shot at 4k, to allow us flexibility to zoom into the footage. After the sequence had an approved cut. We keyed and rotoscoped the selected shots. Special effects and an overall grade were added using After Effects.

Creative Director Jason Gilikinson had conceived the idea of the Strictly pro dancers making their way through the city to a Studio 54 inspired club. With no budget for a location shoot, it was clear from the beginning that there would need to be a green screen shoot.
Strictly Come Dancing’s 19th series began with the pro dancers in an unknown city before gathering for a Studio 54 style group dance.
